The Warlocks are back, now on Tee Pee records, and have just released their new album Heavy Deavy Skull Lover. This one time 7 member band is now down to 4 and free from any major label headaches. The last full length that was released, Surgery, was not a bad album but was not a good album either. In an interview with Bobby in Skyscraper (#20, Winter 2006) he talked about how the label refused to let the band record songs the way they wanted to, forced some changes on them and made any future releases, much less future as a band seem bleak. In 2006 the Warlocks attempted to put an album out on Bomp! called Rebuild and Destroy but where unable to provide the number of tracks Bomp! wanted so the project never happened. Tee Pee records thankfully signed the band with no new demos, no set band lineup, no details at all really. With full creative control back in the bands hand and producer Rod Cervera back behind the controls, only good things could happen. My copy of this LP is still in the mail so this isn’t a record review. Tee Pee has a great write up about the album, explaining how its not radio friendly, its better with headphones and how the dark sound should not be lost on anyone. However they come to terms with the sad reality at the end with this quote:
But with this seasons’ disco indie rock monopoly … we are betting it will…
The Warlocks are giving us, art for art’s sake, a long trip, not a glimpse, into a world that is both beautiful and frightening…
This LP is a limited edition pressing on pink swirl vinyl. It also comes with a coupon to download the album in MP3 format. You can, and should, purchase the album directly from Tee Pee for $14 plus shipping. Tee Pee has not responded to my request for the number of albums printed but I suspect its a short run of no more then 1000. Sometimes I can fall in love with a record before I even hear it, this is one of them. The Warlocks continue to be a band that does not nearly get the respect they deserve, partially because the majority of music fans cannot take the time to actually listen to music and challenge themselves. You can bet when I get this I will be sitting on the floor, headphones on, lost in a wall of sound and not wanting to be found.
